LIVE DJ SET FROM FALL 2010

DO THE DARK LIVE SET by lifepartnermixes

On the subject of expanding influences and new sounds, the progression on skill and flavor, I thought it right to upload a recording of a recent DJ here in Portland. In the last year I've gained some more technical skills and have started to make a lot more of my own edits, remixes and beats, and this live set really showcases that. I'd say about 80% of this material I reworked or created. All mixed on turntables, no prerecorded mixes.

LIVE DJ SET FROM SUMMER 2009

This is a live DJ set I recorded last summer while in New York. It's really interesting to me to revisit this and examine my developments in song selection, production and mixing. Listen, download and enjoy!

#RIDDIM

When Gyptian released Hold Yuh at the end of last year, it seemed like everyone was freaking out. The production, fuzzy and imperfect, complemented the vocal beautifully, creating a perfect slow wine track. Now a riddim, the vibe is for sure going to get someone pregnant. I even wanna have some sexy time with it.

#RIDDIM

This complete fire storm of a carnival soca riddim conjures up some fierce hard wine imagery for me. Coming in at a sexy 118 bpm, the track catches some hot riddim realness but is still easily digestible to those not use to wiling out to these rhythm structures.

PM(mix no. 2)

My friend Justin Gorman asked me to make an exclusive mix for his new design, arts and culture blog Paper Make Stack. He asked to kind roll with a theme, so I chose to look at the evolution of UK garage/2-step beat and rhythm patters. I took tracks from some of favorite producers from back in the day and meshed them with my favorites in the game right now. The result is a fluid mix that travels though 2-step, bassline, funky and future bass.

Download is here

ART PARTY 3/5

I'm super excited to be playing this event coming up on March 5th. Art Party is the brain child of Portland hot shots Sarah Faith Gottesdiener and Jenny Hoyston. I couldn't be more flattered to be asked to play what is undoubtedly becoming Portland's premier art happening. Complete with fashion runways, video installations, body painting and a jerkin dance troupe (dancing to a beat composed by yours truely), Art Party is set to BLOW THE FUCK UP.
I was asked to play a blend of international heat, outside of the typical 125-150bpm range I'm somewhat notorious for playing. I'm stoked to play a stuff like Israeli Dancehall, South African House, 2-step Bhangra, Japanese Baile Funk and so much more. In anticipation, I composed a quick mix of dancehall, cumbia, bhangra, kuduro and Swedish hip hop. Listen to it!

SET STARTERS

Something that I look for in tracks is their ability to begin a set. Something that builds tension, sets a mood and gets the floor ready for whats coming next. I find tracks that have a certain arch to be particularly powerful.

The first track comes from Brooklyn based producer Teleseen. Super future blog Dutty Artz introduced this track into my life, and I couldn't be more grateful. A remix of Vybz's Life Sweet, this beautifully dubby and elegantly spacey 77 bpm number is the perfect first ingredient to kick off a 140+ bass set.
Vybz Kartel -Life Sweet (Teleseen Remix)

Second. The blend of low end, hard, syncopated bass and a familiar vocal track really gets people rowdy. This really well put together remix of One in a Million gets it right; start with the bassline, drop into the original track, move back into the bassline. I appreciate this, Bort Sampson, I really do.
One In A Million by samosoundboy

Lastly. The instrumental into the smash. This is simple. And I'll let you figure it out.
Sticky - Jumeirah Riddim

On a separate note, the new E. Bad song is so fucking good, it makes me want to shout.

#RIDDIM

I've decided that I'm going to make a new Riddim mix every week.
This week is Bay-C's Money Tree Riddim from 2008. Everyone made blends of this when it first came out, but I'm still into it's 90's throwback feel, which reminds of the Buy Out Riddim which slaughtered it in 2001.

MINI MIX #4

WILD LIFE MINI-MIX 4 by lifepartner

Lifepartner - Intro
L-Vis 1990 - United Groove (Kingdom Remix)
Miike Snow - Silvia (Sinden Remix/Lifepartner re-edit)
Fuzzy Logik - The Way You Move
Paul Johnson - Get Down (Laidback Luke Booty Remix)
Cobra Krames - Pork Your face
Jack Spash - I Could Have Loved You (Sinden Remix)
Roska - What's In Your Handbag?
DJ P.O.L. Style - Vampire Killah (LOLBoys remix)
Greenmoney vs Lifepartner - Purdy (featuring Keyshia Cole)

a little international connection...

One thing that I really get into is finding connections in beat building from around the globe. Like the first time I heard Bhang Ragga, the intersection of Dancehall and Bhangra, flawlessly executed by Tigerstyle and the like. From there I found Israeli Cumbia, Japanese Baile Funk, things have gotten insane.
The musical diaspora is one of my biggest influences in what I'm trying to do. I don't think there's a better example of what exactly the dissemination of international dance music has done to production than these two artists:

USA 808 rein from Tel Aviv and create an intense fusion of Dancehall, Crunk, House and Bass. You might have heard them a few months back on the Mad Decent blog when their track She A Boom!. Their stuff is really well put together. Peep this track, which is not the track from the video.
USA 808 - אוהבת סקס

The next track comes from an obvious favorite of mine from Sweden. Maskinen have been an obsession of mine for the last 2 years. Their manic multicultural smorgasbord production keeps evolving and getting weirder. I see a big similarity between Maskinen and USA 808 in their (very often creepy) dark vocal production. Again, I'm not sharing the track from the video.
Maskinen - Nr 1

Basically, I really only give a shit about stuff that's not from America.

Cop it here.

Vybz & Shebba - Do Me Dat

COOLY G

Cooly G is by far my favorite female producer these days. Her spacey, syncopated post-dubstep creations rub me just right. Girl's got some crazy bass in what she's doing, not to mention killer fashion sense. Enjoy this fancy little number.

THE FUTURE AS INSPIRATION

Here at the Wild Life HQ, we take the future seriously. Sure, it's something that a lot of geeky sci-fi nerds ramble on and on about (myself included), but in the realm of modern dance music, it's only thing that matters.
Am I confusing you yet? I'm talking future bass, speed garage, hyper dub... the shit that sounds like it was made on a god damn space ship.
There's a small and growing group of DJ's that are pushing this sound forward, one them would be London's Manara of blog/collective/party entity Night Slugs. I've really been feeling what she's been doing, along with her colleagues Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990, for a while now.
She recently released a new mini-mix for the very fine folks over at Discobelle. This mix is HUGE, and inspiring.

Manara - Miracles Mix

CRAZY COUSINS

2009 was a big year for Crazy Cousins.
In my opinion, they're producing the most interesting funky tracks to date (no offense Silva). I'm biased though, due to their knack for plucking out beautiful vocal tracks from some of the best up and coming female vocalists in the UK.
Expect to hear this track at the debut party, January 28th with our very special guest DJ Nolita in her last performance before shippin out to the gay bay.
